The Artificial Intelligence Laboratory is located in the D.
C. Power Building, 1600 Arastradero Road. Its research is in
artificial intelligence, mathematical theory of computation, time
sharing, human higher mental functions, semantics of natural
languages, symbolic computation, and related topics. It operates a
time-sharing system based on PDP-6 and PDP-10 computers including
about 35 display consoles, computer controlled television cameras,
computer controlled artificial hands, a computer controlled vehicle,
and other on-line devices. The Laboratory is part of the Computer
Science Department, but its facilities are used by students and
faculty of the departments of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical
Engineering, Linguistics, Psychology, Music, and others for projects
that contribute to the research goals of the Laboratory.

Research appointments at the pre- and post-doctoral levels
are available. New graduate students in Computer Science are
automatically considered for appointment as Research Assistants in
the Laboratory. Graduate students in other departments may apply
directly.

Support for various activities of the Laboratory has come
from the Advanced Projects Research Agency of the Defense Department,
National Institutes of Mental Health, National Science Foundation,
and National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
